Text Box: The Dogue de Bordeaux’s majestic presence decorated many estates, serving as personal protection. The French Revolution ended that occupation, with many of the noble guards giving their lives to protect their masters and property. Fortunately, enough dogues survived so we may also enjoy the companionship of this gentle and noble beast.

An intelligent canine, the Dogue is a fast learner and does well with obedience training. The Dogue de Bordeaux has a handsome colouring of either mahogany (red-brown), fawn or golden. He may also have either a red mask, black mask or no mask at all. An undershot jaw is a characteristic of the breed. The dogue is a well-balanced, massive, powerfully-built dog with a very muscular body and a short soft coat that needs minimal grooming. He rarely barks. This breed detests solitude. He enjoys human companionship with a strong loyalty to his family, including other family pets. He is affectionate, devoted to his master and excellent with children.

The Dogue de Bordeaux, has webbed toes and unlike some other large breed muscular dogs, the Bordeaux is an excellent swimmer and quite enjoys the water.
